Section 3: Lhasa
The Potala
The Potala is Lhasa's cardinal landmark and a wonder of eastern architecture. It
was the residence of the Dalai Lama and the seat of the Tibetan government since
the fifth Dalai Lama in the 17th century.
Monks debate in Sera Monastery
The Sera monastery, 5 km north of Lhasa, was founded already in 1419. It's once
huge population of around 5000 monks has now been reduced to several hundred.
Tibetan pilgrims
Tibetan pilgrims show their devotion at the entrance of the Jokhang temple by
prostration, which takes normally from sunrise to sunset. The Jokang was founded
already in the 7th century and is Tibet's most revered religious structure.
