Part 2: Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hu Tiao Xia)

Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge
The 16 km long gorge is part of the upper Yangzi River (Chang Jiang, in this part called Jinsha River). The mountains raise 3900 m above the water level and make this gorge one of the deepest valleys in the world.

   Naxi Family

There are meanwhile several guesthouses along the trek through the gorge. The picture shows the first stop "Naxi Family" on the higher trail from the starting point Qiaoto. The mountain in the background is the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan, Mt. Satseto) impressive 5500 m high. The mountain has since 1999 the highest cable car of Asia (4506 m, visited by us in autumn 2000, but unfortunately no photos here).

Naxi woman

The region around Lijiang is inhabited by the Naxi minority, descendants of Tibetan tribes. Naxi women are normally taller and stronger than their men, and the women do the hard work. The woman on the picture wears the typical dress of the Naxi.

The descent from the newly built road along the lower path down to the water is very step.

Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge
The name of the gorge comes from three narrow sections with big rocks , where it's said that a tiger could jump over the water. The people on the rock in the background visualize the dimensions.
